Norwood Cork Tree Group Members and Supporters at the Tree
To celebrate the installation of signage at the Norwood Cork Tree, the supporters of the campaign to save the tree gathered for a group photo on 14th April 2024.
We had hoped to have a larger celebration at the tree involving more people from the community, but the difficulties of the location made this impossible.
The tree is in good health. A watering system has been installed, so we trust that it will continue to be cherished. Apart from the giant River Red Gum, it is the only tree of any size in the barren expanse of this busy car park.
Michelle Gibson, Kerry Bouman, and Anne Engleson, descendants of Henry Buttery, who planted the tree around 1892, took part in the photo and were thrilled to see 'our tree' being loved and honoured. They had memories of the tree from their earliest childhood and throughout their lives.
Support for the tree has been bipartisan, so we were pleased to have the current MP for Dunstan, Cressida O'Hanlon, joining us, as well as the retiring member for Dunstan and past State Premier, Steven Marshall, and retired MP for this electorate, Greg Crafter. There were also representatives from the Norwood and Kensington Residents Associations, the Kensington and Norwood Writers Group, and the volunteer workers in the NPSP Cultural Heritage Centre, who have all been active in supporting the retention of this historic tree.
