The Norwood Cork Tree

The Norwood Cork Tree is a very precious tree. Planted in his garden by pioneer industrialist Henry Buttery in 1892, the tree still grows in splendour, although its surroundings have transformed from a beautiful garden to a car park.
With no sign denoting its heritage value, most car park visitors are unaware of the significance of the tree. The Norwood Cork Tree has been described as the most significant European planted tree in South Australia.
 The aim of this blog is to raise awareness of the Norwood Cork Tree and its heritage value for Norwood residents and visitors and for the wider South Australian community.

 To celebrate the installation of signage at the Norwood Cork Tree, the supporters of the campaign to save the tree gathered for a group photo on 14th April 2024. We had hoped to have a larger celebration at the tree involving more people from the community, but the difficulties of the location made this impossible.  The tree is in good health. Signage installed for the Norwood Cork Tree

 Signage was installed for the Norwood Cork Tree on 28 March 2024 by the site owner, Australasian Property Developments. Cork Tree in June 2023

Work on the development is approaching completion and Coles is scheduled to open on 21 June.  The developer promised to install signage for the historic Norwood Cork Tree, but we haven't received any notification about when signage will be provided.  The cork tree and the river red gum dominate the car park, and no new trees have been planted to replace the large plane trees that provided some shade.  Under the current care regime the cork tree is flourishing. We hope care will continue into the future. It is such a beautiful and unusual tree for this area.
